Charity collection of Swim wear and accessories

If you’re anything like me as a swimmer and parent, we have lots of outgrown swimwear at home or gear that has never quite fitted so was never worn. That plus event swimming hats and old goggles, we are drowning in unloved swim items! Well, on behalf of The Flipper Club I’d like to help repurpose and recycle our un-used items in order to benefit others and some very deserving charities, see details below.

From the week commencing 4th October at all venues and swimming lessons we will have a bucket / bag for collecting your unwanted good quality swim items (as well as new with labels on). If your old goggles are leaky and broken then I’m afraid they will be for the next person so please only offer quality useable items, including:

  • Swimming hats

  • Goggles

  • Swim costumes and shorts / jammers

  • Other swim wear - children’s neoprene tops or rash vests

What will happen to the collections?

Swimming hats and goggles

Swimming hats and goggles will be sent to Sea and Stream - an outdoor swimming shop with a focus is on offering sustainable products, gifts and solutions for outdoor swimmers.

The hat and goggle collections will be used for the charity SwimTayka - providing free swimming lessons and environmental education about clean water stewardship to underprivileged children who live along the earth’s open waters: rivers, lakes and oceans. Some quality items will also be sent to swim hat makers Cool Bathing who will be using the hats for creative projects. Items that cannot be repurposed will be recycled using a specialist recycling service.

SwimTayka

It is our mission to give disadvantaged communities around the world access to swimming teachers who can not only provide the life skills of swimming, but create a legacy for today’s children, who will grow up to teach the next generation.

Combining swimming with clean water education, we are nurturing a generation of world citizens who will act as environmental stewards who love, care for and respect the life-giving rivers, lakes and oceans along which they live.

Swimming costumes and shorts

Your new, or nearly new bathers, will be sent to Mandi Bodemeaid of Dover Channel Training (DCT) who has started a new charity initiative recycling and benefitting the environment and supporting two fabulous charities along the way. (Details and information on the charities below)

DCT will resell new items (with labels) for £10 and nearly new items for £5 to other swimmers looking for a bargain. All funds raised are then divided equally between the charities.

So far they have raised £150 just by word of mouth at DCT on weekend beach training and we hope to help contribute to their pot!

Survivors of Bereavement By Suicide

We are the only organisation offering peer-to-peer support to all those over the age of 18, impacted by suicide loss in the UK. We help those bereaved by suicide to support each other, at the time of their loss and in the months and years that follow.

We offer peer led support groups, online virtual support groups, a national telephone helpline, online community forum and email support. Suicide recognises no social, ethnic or cultural boundaries and neither do we.
